With a world-class reputation for safeguarding the health and wellbeing of people at work, HSE is adapting and evolving to meet new challenges ahead. To help us meet these challenges we require a number of ambitious Regulatory Scientists to join our Chemicals Regulation Division (CRD).
CRD employs approximately 300 staff who work to deliver UK Competent Authority functions within the UK and EU legislation regulating chemicals, pesticides, biocides and detergents.

CRD is responsible for the regulation of biocides, pesticides, detergents, chemicals covered by REACH, and for compliance with the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation. We currently have exciting opportunities for Regulatory Scientists in 3 different scientific teams. In each scientific team, you’ll be evaluating data submitted in applications for the approval of biocides, pesticides or industrial chemicals.

These are crucial roles and are vital to taking forward the work of the specialist teams in a rapidly changing regulatory environment. Play your part in protecting Human Health and the Environment from these substances.

All the teams are involved in the evaluation of data submitted in support of applications for approval of pesticides and biocides in both the UK and EU. There is liaison with; technical and registration personnel from within CRD, industry, representatives from other Government Departments, and other EU Member States.

These posts will provide you with an in-depth training programme enabling you to gain knowledge in the regulation of chemicals and gain valuable experience in regulatory science, working with UK/EU legislation, communication with stakeholders, working through strategies and our future following EU exit, scientific writing and development of skills in regulatory decision making. CRD also offers stakeholders a comprehensive conference and events training programme and the roles will include attendance at our UK events for training purposes.

Our Regulatory Scientist opportunities are currently in the following scientific areas:

Regulatory Chemistry – The Chemistry team undertake evaluations of a range of data relating to the chemistry (active ingredient and plant protection or biocide product), methods of analysis, metabolism (animal and plant) and residues of pesticides in food and feed in order to carry out associated dietary exposure assessments. The team also provides support on the pesticide policy relating to Maximum Residue Levels, residue monitoring, formulation monitoring and enforcement, and consumer risk assessment.
