Interview Tips & Advice

 

This article provides tips and advices to help you be prepared for an interview.

Before you go to the interview make sure that you've done the basics as first impressions count:

  • Dress smart and conservatively
  • Polish your shoes
  • Don't wear too much jewellery and avoid revealing clothing
  • Make sure that you know the full name of the person interviewing you and their job title
  • Research the company before the interview, you will impress the interviewer if you know information about the company size, their website, services, products mission statement, history...
  • Know where you need to go, perhaps do a dummy run if your unfamiliar with the area) 
  • Re-read the job specification to ensure that you know the in's and out's of the job
  • Know your CV - make sure you know everything you've but in your CV, experience, responsibilities, achievements, skills

 

The following tips and advice are relevant to the actually interview:

  • Arrive early at the interview
  • give a strong, confident handshake
  • Maintain good posture throughout the interview
  • Make strong eye contact with the interviewer and maintain throughout
  • Read the interviwers body language - let them lead.  This is something easily missed but is important, i.e. mirroring their body language if someone is to move their body inwards towards you this shows interest and you should do the same
  • Show openness by keeping your arms on the chair and not folding them
  • Have clear reasons for leaving previous employment and remember never be too critical about a past employer or manager as they might be asked for a reference
  • Have clear examples ready for competency based questions
  • Have examples of previous success, i.e. how they were targeted, did you win the business, how you compared to colleagues
  • At the end of the interview always ask if they have any reservations about you?  this is a key question and if they do have any doubts this is your opportunity to prove you can do the job

  • Why do you want this job?
  • What qualities do you think this job requires?
  • What qualities can you bring to the role?
  • Why do you want to work for this company?
  • How long have you been looking for work?
  • What do you know about this organisation?
  • What interest you about our company?
  • What tasks did you do on a daily basis?
  • Why did you leave your last position?
  • How did you make a difference to your previous employer?
  • What was your greatest success and how did you achieve it?
  • What was your biggest faliure?
  • How could you improve yourself?
  • How well do you wotk with others?
  • Give an example when you took initiative to solve a problem?
  • What motivates you?
  • Are you competitive?
  • What problem did you encounter and how did you overcome this?
  • How do you work under pressure?
  • What are your career goals?
  • How did you get on with your former manager and colleagues?
